Georgia Graham in Saskatchewan

The CCBC tour gives author/illustrators like me a chance to present in schools and libraries in provinces we would never get a chance to otherwise. I have never toured in my neighbouring province of Saskatchewan before the 2011 tour. Most of the libraries had most of my books and the students were primed and ready for me. Some kids could quote my books word for word. The most common question for any of my books -did it really happen? I always make them guess before I tell them. They love to know the inside scoop.

I always have a draw box with everyone’s name. Often the teachers tell me that the students who won the books were the ones who didn’t have many books at home. It seems to work out that way. I draw pictures for them on my big easel and explain drawing techniques. They win the drawings too.

Many of my books depict farm and ranch life in Alberta. I also have a new title Where Wild Horses Run that depicts the rugged beauty of British Columbia. I wasn’t sure if students in Saskatchewan would be as interested in my books as Alberta kids. It turned out they love everything Canadian not just their own province. This was a wonderful opportunity for me to spread out past my usual area.
