Book Week tour required all the energy I had but I am so thrilled that I ended up having just enough because the week turned out to be a whole lot more exhilarating than exhausting. Being a bit of a shy homebody (as are many writers, I’m sure), I was so delighted to find that every one of my dealings with folks from organizers, teachers and librarians to cab drivers and random direction givers (being directionally impaired, I made use of many of these :o) turned out to be warm, energizing and always a treat. And, talk about treats, the kids went down like candy. Many many excellent interactions with enthused, engaged and terrific-question-asking kids made what might have been wearying just plain wonderful (which is not to say that I didn’t fall into bed each night and sleep like a kid who’s just been read to). I felt so honored by the many people who were more than pleased to make sure that I got from A to B with the greatest of ease and smoothability (may I say as smooth as “Chunky No Funky Smoothy Woothy Peanut butter” to quote Camilla Chameleon). And the hushed and awed whispers in school hallways to the tune of “Is that her?! Yes, it’s her!! That’s the author!” made every step that has lead to this satisfying place in my career entirely worthwhile. I am so grateful to have had this experience.
